Trending right now is a mermaid birthday party theme!
You’ll love these easy & affordable DIY mermaid party decorations!
My little girl, who was five years old at the time gave me approximately five days notice that she wanted a mermaid themed birthday party.
It was going to be a unicorn themed birthday party but then that changed.
So that night – I went and created a Pinterest board with all my ideas for a mermaid birthday party.
I did not have much time at all so I needed all the mermaid party ideas that were quick and easy.
I love all things DIY and planning party décor for my kids birthday parties is the best!
Girls birthday parties are especially fun to plan because there are lots of creative crafting and DIY ideas.
Party venue costs are as high as ever so we tend to have a lot of kids birthday parties at our house.
I had so much fun with this mermaid theme.
The color palette was perfect for the mermaid vibe!
I was so happy with how it all turned out that I of course decided to write a blog post!
For reference, this was for my daughter’s 6th birthday party.

DIY Mermaid Party Decorations
When researching mermaid birthday party ideas, I noticed that mermaid parties range from babies to little girls to big girls.
There are different mermaid theme types which include little mermaid themes to sea birthday parties.
My favorite idea was the DIY octopus using a balloon and streamers.
I don’t know why I ended up not doing it!

DIY Mermaid Decorations
Jellyfish
The pink jelly fish were super easy and are one of the best mermaid party ideas I’ve seen!
I actually had two hot pink paper lanterns already and simply cut out white circles with cardstock.
Then I used a black permanent marker to draw the eyeball.
After that, I attached the eye balls to the paper lanterns with tape instead of using hot glue so that I did not damage the paper lanterns.
I like to reuse things!
The last step was to use pink streamers that I bought from the Dollar Tree to make the jellyfish legs.
I hung these to my ceiling with command hooks and thought these were so much fun!
Or you can skip the DIY and purchase jelly fish in lots of colors here!
Ocean Seaweed
Next up was to create the ocean seaweed.
I picked up a bunch of streamers in bright colors from the Dollar Tree.
I think this was one of my favorite decoration ideas.
It was very simple to twist the streamers for this sea party decoration.
I also had some leftover starfish, seahorse and sea shell cutouts that came with the cupcake decorations that I used.
Painter’s tape was my friend here so that I did not damage the wall at all.
These fit perfectly will my color scheme!
Mermaid Net
Here’s another great way to add mermaid birthday party décor.
Grab some fishing net and then simple add some cut outs!
I got mine at Party City but if I had more time, this would have been an easy DIY!
You can create cut outs that go with the rest of your color scheme – how cute!

Mermaid Party Backdrop
Pulling all the party décor together into the perfect mermaid party backdrop was the fun part!
Believe it our not my every day dining room artwork was the perfect starting point!
I also got this pretty blue shiny backdrop which worked so perfect.
Also incredibility affordable!
I found this mermaid tail pinata for a very affordable price as well.
This pinata was a pretty big size actually.
If you’re looking for a smaller pinata, this one is really cute!
I was able to grab the rest of the mermaid birthday party supplies from party city!
I got the large helium mermaid balloon and the rest of the matching set the day before the party.
Here is an affordable mermaid tail photo backdrop that I found.
DIY Mermaid Cake
I made my own mermaid desserts and I always use my dining room sideboard to serve desserts.
It ended up being the perfect mermaid dessert table.
We had a mermaid cake, mermaid cupcakes and a DIY lollipop tree!
Side note: there were lollipop wrappers everywhere after the party!
For the cake, I bought round cake pans and staked two cakes on top of one another.
I spray painted some sea shells gold that I got from the Dollar Tree.
I used these for the base of the cake.
Then I found the perfect mermaid cake topper.
For the mermaid cupcakes, I got mermaid paper cupcake wrappers that came with cupcake toppers.
I make some pink and purple frosting colors for the cupcakes to match the theme!
We also always sing happy birthday in the dining room so it makes it very easy to serve the cupcakes right from the buffet side board.
Mermaid Party Drinks
Tons of ideas from mermaid theme drinks including sea water, ocean water or mermaid water mocktails!
I recommend lemonade, Koolaid and/or food coloring for this!
Mermaid Birthday Party Supplies
Did you know that the Dollar Tree has mermaid themed napkins?
I bought these and incorporated with plain colors bulk plates and napkins which was very affordable!
Mermaid Birthday Party Games
Our mermaid birthday party activity was the mermaid tail pinata which also doubled as a goody bag full of candy for each child to take home!
There are lots of other fun, creative ideas out there to try.
My personal favorite ideas are to having a guessing game on how many seashells are in a jar and the guest who gets the closest wins.
Another idea is to do a mermaid ring toss game with some plastic diving rings.
Or have a treasure hunt and have the kids search for hidden objects around the house!
Don’t forget to take pictures!
Mermaid Party Favors
Not pictured here but I found the cutest little mermaid foam squirters for the kids to take home.
These are simple little toys that little kids can play with in the bathtub or pool.
We also cut out starfish and used gems to make starfish wands!
This is a great favor idea that is also a mermaid birthday party craft activity.
Mermaid Birthday Party Invites
I’m not sure if anyone sends out mailed birthday party invitations anymore but I generally use Evite.
Evite has some very cute mermaid birthday invitations that are absolutely free!
