Must Read Furniture Refinishing Tips

DIY

Today I am sharing the reveal of our kitchen table transformation! As with any DIY, there was joy, frustration and everything in between. If you are considering refinishing furniture, you must read my furniture refinishing tips so you don’t make the same mistakes we did! In this post, I’m sharing helpful furniture refinishing tips applicable to how to refinish a maple table but these tips are applicable to any furniture refinishing project.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. If you click through a link and make a purchase, it will earn me a small commission, at no additional cost to you! See our disclaimer for details.

We moved into our home two years ago and this is actually our second furniture refinish project (along with 1000 other projects).

The first one was a China cabinet we bought off of Facebook marketplace. It was a gorgeous cabinet but it was a golden honey color stain and I was going for more of a gray/oak look. I still need to get a blog post up on this one so you can hear what ultimately happened with this cabinet but the short version is that I said I would never refinish another piece of furniture again…

I have been wanting to refinish the kitchen table since the day we moved in. This table was a hand me down from my husbands family. It’s a solid maple wood table in a honey golden finish. I think it was originally from Pottery Barn and it has already been refinished once.

Before

I am not totally sure what prompted us to start this in the middle of the Summertime but I think it was because we were refreshing some items in our kitchen. I really wanted the whole space to feel finished!

So the decision was made and on a Thursday evening, we took apart the table and moved it into the garage to get started.

The Sanding Process

Friday mid-day we got started on sanding. I have actually never used a sander before but it really wasn’t too hard. I did about half and Kris did the other half. We started with a 150 sanding grit to remove the old stain and polyurethane and then went over everything with a finer 220/250 sanding grit. The original maple looked so pretty underneath and I was getting very excited!

You can see some cool timelapse videos of the sanding process over on my Instagram stories highlight called “table”.

I actually thought the sanding went very well. It was much easier then the China cabinet because all of the surfaces to be sanded are flat. It was much faster than I thought it would be too. About halfway through, I asked Kris which was harder, sanding or staining. He said staining without hesitation. I thought it would have been the opposite so I posted a poll with my Instagram followers – they also thought sanding was harder.

I think in many cases sanding is harder but not in this case so I must admit, my husband was right!

So this is a good time to mention lesson learned #1 – do your research. I guess because we had just completed our mudroom bench seat which was also stained, I thought that we knew what we were doing and that it would not be very difficult. Keep reading, here is where the fun begins!

Staining

After the sanding was done, I was off to home depot to pick out some stain colors. I was going to that gray/oak type of color for the table. There were SO many to choose from!

IMG_6204-2MP
IMG_6205-2MP

I also asked two friends for advice. The first friend uses the same stain as I do but she mixed colors which truly would make the color options endless! The second friend used a custom color from Sherwin Williams. I don’t know why I automatically went to The Home Depot. I just went into autopilot and did the same thing that I did last time.

I typically do all my paint shopping at Sherwin Williams. They are paint experts and so they usually offer very helpful advice.

So I left Home Depot with 5 different color samples to try!

When my husband went to Home Depot Saturday morning, I actually had him pick up two more samples! We put all the samples on Saturday morning on the underside of the table. I was in between Flagstone and Weathered Gray.

You should also pair all your other finishes with the test spots. It just helps to see everything together – just like a design board! I used a hardwood sample but I didn’t have a paint sample! Lesson learned # 2 – create a little design board – doesn’t need to be fancy! Eventually I did bring the testers inside to actually see it in the space. Our walls are gray so I didn’t want to use a gray stain which may blend in too much.

I got a little worried that the flagstone would be too dark so I decided to mix in some white… I tested the color a bunch of times underneath the table (albeit in bad lighting) and decided, let’s do this! So I went off to Home Depot to get a sealable can to mix the stain in and to store the stain in case we ever needed extra.

Lesson learned # 3 stain colors can look very different depending on the type of wood. I did not realize that maple was a hard wood to stain but many of the stains I tried where showing up as that golden/honey color that I was aiming to change.

Lesson Learned #4 view your stain samples in all different lighting environments. It will make a difference for sure.

Ok so once I said “let’s do this” – we did it. And we did then entire table. Looking back, we should have definitely done an entire leg but not the entire table!

Lesson learned #5 – can you tell that this is where we started to hit road blocks? Don’t stain the entire table with the color you have chosen.

Once everything was stained, we tested one part with the poly and we felt like the table was giving off that golden honey glow. Noooooo. It especially came through with the polyurethane.

Lesson learned #6 – some stains have a poly mix which seals the wood in coat #1. What this means is that since one of the stains I mixed had poly in it, it was really hard to add additional coats and see a noticeable impact….

At this point, we thought we would have to start over! Luckily sanding didn’t take that long, right?? So we sanded a few of the legs and started to try the stains (without mixing) and the polyurethane samples again. We tried the 2 colors we were in between with one coat, two coat, etc. This time I looked at them in different lighting too. The problem with having the stain samples on the underside of the table was that I could not carry that inside!

Even with all those tests, I still was undecided what to do and decided to sleep on it.

Sunday morning rolls around and I start to research polyurethane and wouldn’t you know that there are multiples types. The most common are oil and water – lesson learned # 7 coincides with lesson learned #1 – do your research. So off to Home Depot I went to get the water based polyurethane – fingers crossed!

When I got to home depot, there was a fairly large sign right above the polyurethanes that explains the difference in oil vs water based polyurethanes. Oil based gives it a warm golden hue and the water based is crystal clear! Wahoo! Water based for the win!

There are also different polyurethane sheens just like in paints – glass, satin, matte, triple coat etc. I actually didn’t realize that there was a matte but that is the sheen we went with! In our mudroom, we went with the satin and we like the satin sheen too.

I decided to try a piece that had 1 coat of the mixed stain plus one coat of the flagstone. We added the water based polyurethane and while we were waiting for that to dry, we were cautiously optimistic! Then, we looked at the color in all kinds of lighting and decided that we thankfully did not have to start over and could continue by adding another layer of the flagstone stain and changing the type of polyurethane! Phew!!

Although we did have to re-sand our tester legs, that was redone in no time! So 7 lessons learned later… I figured I would share them for other non-furniture finishing experts that are thinking about taking on a project like this.

After

Overall, it was an easy project and we saved a lot of money by refinishing a perfectly good piece of hand me down furniture. The pictures here have our current kitchen table chairs but I have picked out new ones and am also thinking about adding a rug! Update – I have ordered a rug!! Can’t wait until it arrives!

I’m hoping that these furniture refinishing tips were helpful to you! Do you have a piece of furniture that you would like better if it was refinished? I would to hear if you have tried or are thinking about tackling a furniture DIY refinish project!

Dining Room Tray Ceiling

coffered ceiling vs tray
Tray ceiling before building a coffered ceiling in our Dining Room

We purposely added this tray ceiling as an option while building our house.

Our main floor has 9ft ceilings but with the tray ceiling it’s 10ft.

The tray ceiling was not an expensive add on but the coffered ceiling cost would have added a lot so we decided to go with the tray ceiling and had always planned on adding a DIY coffered ceiling later on.

We started the DIY coffered ceiling & wainscoting moulding project on Mother’s Day and it was completely finished and styled by Father’s Day so about a month.

It was mostly a weekend project.

I have some really cool time-lapse videos of this project on my Instagram IGTV channel!

The wainscoting moulding wall was quick & easy.

A beginner DIY’er could do definitely do this!

This feature wall is gorgeous and makes a big statement!

It really accents our white kitchen cabinets, our white trim and our white stair railings.

Building A Coffered Ceiling

Building coffered ceiling is definitely a more advanced DIY requiring more skill & tools but I love what it adds to the tray ceiling!

It compliments the rest of the white woodworking in this room too.

Coffered Ceiling Cost

The materials for our coffered ceiling cost us between $400-$600.

The main costs were for the wood, crown moulding and paint supplies.

We already had all the tools required for this DIY coffered ceiling so no additional cost there.

Painted Coffered Ceiling

We have used  Sherwin Williams paint in our entire home and this project would be no different.

We decided to go with the Pro Classic semi-gloss paint in bright white.

As always, we used our paint sprayer which made the job fast & easy.

The ceiling & accent wall were painted in a few hours and took two coats.

I love the paint sprayer BUT we had a ton of paint dust.

We used plastic drapes to enclose the space to minimize the dust but that stuff still got everywhere!

Coffered Ceiling Recessed Lighting

We had a rough in for the chandelier light through our builder but we also added 4 small can lights as well.

The chandelier and can lights are both on different switches but I generally like to use them at the same time.

Tablescape

Now you may be saying to yourself, nice table setting but you have no chairs!

This is true so I will explain.

I love a good tablescape.

It dresses up the table!

I love this table runner but I like to mix it up and take that off from time to time as well.

The key to a good tablescape is definitely the perfect centerpiece.

I have a little bit of layering for this centerpiece. I love this natural slate serving tray which I always use for charcuterie spreads.

Then I have a beautiful wood bowl with the most gorgeous faux artichokes you have ever seen

I do love artichokes and they are a trendy home decor item right now especially for the kitchen!

Place Setting

For the place setting, I have neutral placemats to go with any holiday or theme.

I got these new napkins and napkin rings which I’m loving!

And then using my Grandmother’s silverware and glasses.

I just love having her items in my home!

Dining Room Chairs

So about the chairs, I am going to purchase two fancier chairs to flank the window and use as end chairs when this room is in use.

Update: my sister was moving and had two fancy dining room chairs that I’ve snagged – how nice of her and lucky for me!

Shop My Favorite Dining Room Chairs

As I said in my progress post, I actually don’t have any other chairs in my dining room.

When we use the dining room, I bring my kitchen chairs in which are in the next room over.

Updated: I bought new kitchen chairs and officially moved my kitchen chairs into my dining room!

I use my dining room a lot for party serving so I like to have it open so that people can easily walk around the table.

Check out my first birthday party where I used my dining room for serving!

It also keeps the kitchen itself from being all cluttered!

When the dining room is not in use, it looks bigger without all the chairs.

I don’t know, it’s what I like! And its functional.

Dining Room Wall Art

coffered tray ceiling

What really makes the feature wall POP is the gorgeous 60 x 40 artwork and the buffet sideboard!

I found this artwork for a very reasonable price and I love it even better in person than I did online!

Our new wall art was the perfect size and went well with the area rug which I’ve had for awhile.

Our Dining Room Furniture

I’ve also had the buffet sideboard to match my dining room table for over a year.

I was really impressed by the quality of this piece, the pretty color and it is a great size!

It has 4 drawers and 4 drawers and stores anything I will ever need in a dining room!

It holds everything from serving dishes, my Grandmother’s glasses and dishes, holiday dishes, you name it!

I also picked out a few decor items to compliment the space, I wanted to keep the gold/cream/tan neutral tones in the room and carry that into the buffet decor.

Additionally, I wanted to add a little bit of blue to go with the artwork and if you look close there is a little pop of pink in the cherry blossoms.

Whether you’re just looking to better organize your existing space or you’re building a new kitchen, organization is key to enjoying your time spent there. I’ve geared these kitchen organization tips towards any kitchen – big, small, new, or older!

Small Kitchen Appliance Storage

An appliance closet full of kitchen tools is one of our favorite ideas for kitchen organization.
Our Appliance Garage

Our Appliance Garage

When I was first exploring ideas for kitchen organization for our home, I knew that kitchen appliance storage was going to be really important. And I love the solution we came up with that keeps our appliances nearby but not sitting all over our kitchen counters.

If you have any type of closet or hutch nearby to your kitchen, I would highly recommend storing all your small appliances there – it’s one of my favorite kitchen organization hacks! Hopefully you don’t have as many as I do, but putting them all in a central location not only makes them easy to locate, but also opens up valuable space in your cabinets!

Ideas for Kitchen Organization: Spices

Spices are one of the biggest kitchen organization challenges! Some you use daily, some you use once a year. You want them near your cooking space, but also kept organized and preferably hidden out of plain view.

Luckily, I’ve got some great ideas for kitchen organization – and some awesome kitchen organization products – that will keep your spices in perfect order!

A vertical spice race drawer pulls out from a kitchen island for easy access during cooking - and is one of our favorite ideas for kitchen organization.
Sliding Shelf Spice Rack – More Spices Alphabetized in Another Drawer
  • Alphabetize – no matter where you store your spices, take the time to alphabetize! It saves so much time when you are making a recipe with a lot of different spices! Others will be impressed to that you can find the rosemary or coriander so quickly! Speaking of recipes, I have been adding all of my go to recipes on Pinterest – if you are looking for meal ideas, you will want to head over and follow along.
  • Sliding Shelf Spice Rack – my kitchen was designed to have this shelf in it and I now would never be able to live with out it. It is right next to my cooktop and super convenient while cooking! But if you are like most and aren’t renovating or building a new kitchen, organization options for spices are still out there! Kitchen Organization – Cabinet Plate Storage

A cabinet is pictured with dishes and plates set up on a standing plate storage rack - one of our favorite ideas for kitchen organization.

When it comes to kitchen organization, cabinets need a little extra TLC. They can so easily get crowded and cluttered! These plate organizers are some of the best kitchen organization products out there.

There is nothing wrong with stacked plates, of course, but I love these plate organizers!! They really make the cabinets look and feel extra organized! It also makes it easier to quickly grab one. These are really inexpensive and a great way to store your plates.

Kitchen Gadget & Cutlery Organizer

If you’re on a mission to master kitchen organization, utensils are probably near the top of your must-organize list. A silverware organizer is a staple in any kitchen but I do love and recommend my bamboo organizer!

Some like to display their knives in a butcher block on the counter which also serves as a décor item! Others like to store their cutlery out of sight in a drawer. I’m one to keep it out of sight. Similarly, I like to keep my kitchen gadgets out of sight too. I like for everything to have a place so I know where it is!

Below are a few of my favorite kitchen organization products for your drawers – everything from trimmable to expandable!

Vertical Skinny Cabinet Kitchen Organization Ideas

A tall vertical cabinet is one of our favorite ideas for kitchen organization to store baking pans and cutting boards.

My kitchen was designed to have a tall, vertical cabinet like this and I absolutely love it. On one side I keep my cutting boards and on the other, my sheet pans. Storing these this way is not only a huge space saver but it just makes these really easy to get to. In my prior kitchen, I had the sheet pans all smashed up under the kitchen sink on the side of the cabinet and cutting boards in a drawer under my Ziploc bags.

But if you’re not building a new kitchen, organization space like this is still possible! You can very easily add a divider to a standard cabinet and have this space too! One of the best places is probably the cabinet under the kitchen sink! Just create a divider – or two – with a piece of wood!

Food Storage Container Organization

A drawer is pictured filled with glass food storage and food storage covers.
Our Tupperware Storage

The dreaded tupperware organization…You’ve lost the top, you open the cabinet and everything comes spilling out, everything is mismatched – yeah, we’ve all been there. Figuring out how to store tupperware are some of the most sought-after ideas for kitchen organization.

But this year for Christmas, my husband got me these really cool pegboard kitchen organization features for our drawers! These peg boards are trimmable for an exact fit. You can also add these in a slide out cabinet.

A trimmable peg board organizer is one of our favorite ideas for kitchen organization, including food storage container organization.
Trimmable Peg Board Organizer

If you don’t have a drawer or a slide out cabinet, there are other options too! I love anything that is adjustable/expandable so these kitchen organization bins are absolutely perfect for Tupperware storage in any kitchen! When organizing, I just love the words adjustable, expandable, retractable and collapsible!

Kitchen Organization for Pots and Pans

Pots and pans are stored in a large kitchen drawer with drawer organizers - one of our favorite ideas for kitchen organization.
Pots & Pans Organization

Another kitchen staple that you need well organized? Those essential pots & pans. Also for Christmas, similar to the Tupperware organization, my husband got me these pots & pans peg drawer organizer accessories. It is what pots & pans organization dreams are made of! It makes it so easy to grab and find the right pan and/or lid! I highly recommend this if you have large drawers or drawer pull outs and are looking for new ideas for kitchen organization!

Last but not least, a place for trash and recycle. I have mine right next to my sink which is perfect! I have two cans and I buy blue recycle bags so guests can easily tell which is which. Many people don’t realize they can go from an average kitchen to a truly standout kitchen with the right light fixture design.

We have been in our home for four years now and have changed our kitchen island lighting out 3 times!

We have even gone from 3 pendants over our island to 2 pendants over our island.

Pendant Light Height Over a Island

      pendant light height over island
The Pendant Lights Pictured: the bottom of the light is 35″ from the kitchen counter and we have 9-foot ceilings

As you choose your lights for over your kitchen island, it is important take into account the height of the light in relation to the island itself.

In other words, how high off the island countertop should your pendant lights hang?

As a general rule of thumb, the ideal pendant light height over an island is about 30-36 inches.

This will ensure that the light is high enough to provide adequate illumination while also being low enough to avoid being a visual obstruction.

Note that the average pendant light is between 20 and 36 inches tall.

There are many pendant lights that are adjustable in height vs some that aren’t.

height of pendant lights over island

For 8-foot ceiling height, your pendant light height over your island should be about 30”.

If you have 9-foot ceiling height, your pendant light height over your island should be between 30-36 inches depending on the size of the pendant light itself.

Maybe you have a smaller island, opt for shorter pendants that won’t overwhelm the space.

For a larger island, taller pendants will make a statement without being too overpowering.

How Many Pendant Lights Over Island

The number of pendant lights should be based on functionality as well as personal preference.

When we had our 3 smaller glass island pendants, I loved that they put out a lot of light.

I was able to turn on my kitchen pedant lights without any other lights even at night!

We loved the look of our kitchen island pendants and that fact that they were very functional too.

Now we have two oversized lantern pendants that each have 6 smaller light bulbs.

Even though we only have two pendants over our island now, we still have plenty of light since these are open pendants.

I absolutely love look of the two pendants.

Not only is it trendy, I feel like it opens up the kitchen island and makes the entire kitchen feel bigger!

This lantern also comes in a 4 light lantern island pendant if you are looking for something a bit smaller.

I have a matching pendant chandelier for my dining room too!

Pendant Light Spacing Over Kitchen Island

The spacing of your pendant lights should be based on the size of your island and the height of your ceilings.

For a small island, you’ll want to space your pendants closer together and maybe consider a smaller pendant light.

With a larger island, you can space them further apart. And if you have high ceilings, you’ll need to adjust the spacing accordingly.

Now let me show you some actual examples of how you can calculate and hang your pendant lights above your island.

      3 Pendants Over Island

      kitchen island 3 pendant lighting

To hang 3 pendants over your island, divide your kitchen island length by 4.

This will be the amount of space you need in between each pendant and also from ends of the island.

      pendant lights clear glass
Pendant Light Source Link – 9″ Tall x 6″ Wide Pendant Dimensions

As I mentioned before, we started with 3 small clear pendants over our island.

This allowed us to have one pendant light over each counter stool.

This worked well and looked great.

      We got lots of compliments.

See more below on the pros of glass pendants and some glass pendants that I’m loving!

One day I decided that I wanted a little more color in my kitchen.

I shopped and shopped for new pendants and ultimately decided to try a darker more modern pendant.

We did three kitchen island light pendants again.

As you can see from the photo below, these pendants were too large for the space so they didn’t last long.

2 Pendant Lights Over Kitchen Island

After having just gone too big with the pendant lights over our island, I contemplated between 2 or 3 pendants over our island.

I talked it over with my husband…

Instead of changing around any of the existing electric, which was doable but would have been a bit painful, we decided to use the existing electric and just cover the 3rd one in the middle that we were no longer going to use.

At first, I was worried about doing this because I thought the light cap would be an eye sore but truthfully, I never notice it and if we really wanted to we could close up the hole.

how far apart should pendant lights be over an island
Pendant Lighting Link Source – 22.5″ tall x 16″ wide Pendant Dimensions

      Formula 1

      2 pendant lights over island

Divide your island length by 4.

Use that measurement to hang your pendants from the left and right side edge of your island.

This formula will leave a larger opening in the center.

Note: this is the formula that we used for ours and it works well for us because we have a cooktop in the center of our island.

I love my large pendants and I feel like they are the perfect pendants for our space!

Pro Tip for hanging a pendant light: when you get your pendant lights, lay them out on top of your island to test out the spacing options and see which one works best in your kitchen.

      Formula 2

      2 pendants over island

Divide your island length by 3.

Use that measurement to hang your pendants from the left and right side of your island end.

This formula will put your 2 pendants more toward the center of the island and is also a great option.

Pro Tip for spacing a pendant light: you can use one of the easy formulas above or use a custom layout for your kitchen. You just want to be sure that your island pendant lights are at least 6” for either end of the island.

Check out this video to see all 3 pendant lights up close in my kitchen!

What To Consider When Choosing Pendant Lighting Over Kitchen Island

When choosing pendant lighting for kitchen projects, it’s important to start with some basic considerations, such as the material the lights are made with, the size, color and other features.

Don’t miss tons of beautiful, affordable island kitchen pendant lighting ideas linked below.

Clear Glass Pendant Lights For Kitchen Island

      • Pro – the light penetrates through the glass into the space
      • Con – you need a very specific light bulb for the lighting to look good – linked some below!

      Solid Pendant Lighting

      • Pro – very trendy!
      • Con – the lighting does not put out as much light as the clear glass so you will need to pair these with other accent lighting such as under cabinet lighting
      • Con – consider how your kitchen is set up and if the solid lighting will be too obtrusive to the view of the kitchen

Size Of Pendant Lights Over Island

Oversized island pendants are in right now!

If you are like me and you have 3 pendant lights, you could just hang 2 and put a cap over the middle one and do larger pendants! Make sure you measure to ensure the right fit.

If your kitchen is smaller or you’re worried about obstructing the view to the kitchen with large lights, then there are still lots of beautiful options for small kitchen pendant lighting.

      Kitchen Pendant Lighting Dust

All pendants collect a lot of dust and need to be cleaned regularly. But some colors show it more than others – exactly like car colors! If you’re not a fan of dusting, you may want to consider a lighter color pendant that won’t show dust as quickly as darker colors.

      Light Bulbs For Pendant Lights

It’s also important to consider the type of light bulbs you’ll need when shopping for affordable pendant lighting for kitchen projects. Some pendants will need very specific types of bulbs, so be sure to do your research when choosing your kitchen lighting.

Here are some light bulb finds. I did a lot of trial and error with light bulbs for our pendants so I hope this helps you find some the first time.

Benefits Of a Minimalist Family Home

You have heard phrases such as live simply, be a minimalist, live without clutter, etc. but sometimes its hard to take a step back and see just how much stuff you have that you don’t need.

From my own personal experience, I lived in my first home for 9 years.

        Our First Home

There were parts of my home that were cluttered and I felt like I was always spending time organizing stuff!

I have always been the type of person that is overwhelmed by clutter.

When we went through the process of selling our home, it was very eye opening to me.

You can read more about our home selling process here.

During that process, we purged and necked down to the bare amount of stuff that we needed.

The minimalist definition is actually different for everyone but ultimately the goal is to live in your home in a way that makes YOU happy.

Here is a great quote about clutter:

“Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”
        — William Morris

        My Minimalist Home

Fast forward two years later in our new home which is two times the size!

While we have been good about trying not to accumulate a lot of stuff and continually purging, it does take time and its hard.

I am determined that a bigger house doesn’t mean we need to fill it with more stuff.

So this post is partially for me too!!

        Minimalist Home Tips

Here are some simple & easy tips for you to be on your way to creating your minimalist house!

        How to DeClutter Your Home

        Don’t Get More Stuff

        This is a good one.

What I mean by this is every time you buy something, ask yourself – when will I get rid of this? Do I really NEED this? Can I resell it later? Those types of questions.

Now I must admit that this is especially hard with children because they out grow out of clothing and toys so quickly!

In fact, if I am being honest, most of my clutter problem is not my stuff, its theirs!

I sometimes wonder – how do you have a minimalist home with kids?

A lot of what I buy though is what I’ll call consumables – food, paper products, personal care products – these things are fine so long as you actually use them and don’t have a corona virus stock pile of toilet paper!

        Declutter Like a Mother

Always have a donation bag set up.

Keep it out of sight in a closet but that way when you come across something you don’t want/need – you can immediately put it in your bag.

For me, it’s easier to get rid of things in a slow trickle vs a big bang.

Do I have a hoarding problem in this sense? I get it from my Dad’s side of the family!

Anyway, I don’t have time to do this next part as regularly as I would like but pick one space in your home per month and go through it.

        I LOVE this idea!

Don’t just look at it – take every single thing out and put it back in.

Something about that approach is WAY more effective.

You may have things you want to sell and things you want to donate or give to family/friends.

        Decluttering Hacks

        Decluttering My Closet

Hanger trick – I love this trick.

I think I picked it up on Pinterest somewhere along the way but when I moved into my new home, I turned all the hangers around backward!

That way I know what I have worn in two years and what I have not. Now a month after moving here, I got pregnant and that obviously changed what I could wear so I am just now at the point where I have been through each season and know what I wear vs what I don’t by the hangers!

But you don’t need to be moving to do this – go turn them around right now and in three or six months see for yourself what you don’t wear!

        declutter closet
        Decluttering My Pantry

Pantry Trick – I thought of this one on my own!

When I moved, I put little yard sale circle stickers on the bottom of all my spices to date how long I have them post move!

This would also work for other things like canned goods or other non-perishable pantry items.

Declutter By Selling or Giving Away

If I know something would be helpful to a family member or friend, I’ll offer to them first.

Otherwise, I sell everything I can and have a lot of success doing so.

I will say that it takes a lot longer and causes more stress.

It also just takes up precious and valuable time but it’s what I do.

There are certain things that I know are not worthwhile and I don’t sell them.

Instead, I give them away or donate them.

If I list something and it does not sell, then I remove the listing and donate it.

Where To Sell Stuff And Which Platforms To Sell Stuff?

Note: this is just what works for me – could vary from person to person.

Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist – great for large items that are expensive to ship. I listed Facebook marketplace first because it is my go to selling platform. It’s easy and has zero fees! I have also heard that Facebook yard sale groups have success too!

Mercari – I have sold a few things here. This site is great for kids stuff! They do charge fees.

Poshmark – I only sell higher end, name brand clothes here but have had success! Fees involved but its the right platform for these types of items.

Ebay – I use Ebay for collectibles, electronics and make up of all things! I would love a report of how much I’ve sold on Ebay over the years!

        Minimalist Style Home

Have you heard of the concept of living in a staged home?

This does require me to buy some more stuff but it also looks pretty and so long as it’s totally functional – to me its money well spent.

I have always loved going into a staged model home! And have also always wanted my home to look like one.
