      What Is A Mudroom?

      Design

A common question I get asked is “what is a mudroom?”

I am explaining what a mudroom is and everything you need for a organized entryway space.

What is a Mudroom Used For?

Generally speaking, a mudroom is used for the storage and removal of outdoor items.

It’s the perfect drop zone as you enter your home.

By keeping all of your outdoor essentials in a separate room, it will make it easier to maintain a clean and organized home.

Many new homes now have a dedicated entryway space as part of the interior design.

Add a mudroom for another older home too!

A mudroom is the perfect DIY project.

I have a tutorial with free plans of my own DIY mudroom..

A mudroom can be created out of so many unique spaces in your home.

What Should You Include In Your entryway space?

There are many elements to creating a functional entryway space that you can customize to meet the needs of your family.

Each of these aspects will help keep it organized and provide a convenient storage spot.

Storage is the most important feature!

        Bench Seating

Seating to put on and remove shoes is a great feature.

A mudroom bench makes it so convenient to sit and take shoes on and off.

I love the built in bench with drawers for shoe storage or the idea of a separate stylish bench.

        Cubbies For Storage

Having places to put all of the coats, bags and any other day to day items is a great way to keep your home more organized.

Pair your cubbies with baskets for a less cluttered look.

This is where you can really make the room feel like the rest of your home by adding doors or baskets that match other existing decor.

For some additional inspiration, check out my images of mudroom design post.

You will also sometimes hear mudroom cubbies referred to as mudroom lockers.

        Coat Hooks

Add wall hooks are another good idea for more organization.

Install hooks for each member of the family and for guests too!

        High Traffic Rugs

An entryway space definitely needs to have a hard surface floor to make cleaning easy but you’ll also want to add a more homey touch with a rug.

I get tons of questions and compliments on the ceramic tile in our mudroom.

Check out my round up of the perfect mudroom rugs.

A rug will collect some of the dirt and also prevent some one from potentially sliding on a slick surface.

        what a mudroom

Why do they call it a mud room?

The mud room meaning is a room is designed to catch all of the messy and muddy items as they enter your home avoiding that mess from entering the rest of your home.

The mud room is typically located off the garage entrance or by the back door as a informal location for the occupants of the home.

What is the difference between a mudroom and a laundry room?

Laundry rooms and mudrooms are often combined or confused.

Both function similar to a utility room but have very different purposes.

The purpose of a mudroom is to collect all of the muddy and dirty outdoor gear.

A laundry room is a small to medium sized room plumbed and wired specifically for a washer and dryer.

Some laundry rooms even contain a sink for hand washing items.

A mudroom on the other hand is often a little larger and designed for storage space.

It is the designated spot in the home to take off muddy and wet items, especially shoes.

Many families due to lack of space and the layout of their homes find themselves combining the spaces.

Clever and well planned storage solutions are the key in making a the combo room function well.

Is a mudroom the same as a foyer?

More often than not, no a mudroom is not the same as a foyer.

Entering a home to a large open and spacious foyer is inviting, convenient and beautiful to walk into.

Traditionally, a foyer will have a small coat closet to store guest items or powder room to freshen up.

Related: see my foyer coat closet makeover project.

On the other hand, a mudroom is designed for the occupants of the home to enter and is most often much larger than a foyer of the home.

A mudroom is a landing spot for occupants and dirty items, where as a foyer is a welcoming spot for guests that is often decorated in the same style as the home.

If you have the option should you have both? Absolutely!

Having a mudroom in the home, gives you the ability to keep your foyer less cluttered.

Another advantage is having a dedicated space that has ample storage and is easy to clean!

There is so much ability to store your extra shoes, coats and even snow gear that a foyer does not provide you without causing lots of extra clutter.

what is a mudroom in a house

Why I am passionate about an organized entryway space? Being organized aids relaxation!

I hope this helps you to now know what a mudroom is and determine if you want one in your own home!

Working out of a beautiful, functional and organized home office is the only way to go!

Let me show you this before! That pink chair was the WORST!!

Trust me, until recently, I was working out of the opposite!

I used to joke on zoom calls that my chair was going to break but thankfully it never did.

                Executive Home Office

I finally hit my breaking point and decided to change my home office from a zero to all new executive like home office.

Anytime I look to redo a space in my home, I do extensive research before I buy my home products.

I looked for desks at pretty much every online and in person store you can think of.

I ultimately narrowed it down to a desk table vs a desk with drawers.

If I went with the desk table, then I would have ended up needing to buy storage cabinets for my office stuff.

So I created a few different design boards and got out my measuring tape!

Not measuring is a lesson I’ve learned the hard way a few too many times…

Another aspect of this office makeover is where I would plug everything in.

After pricing out the office desk I liked with the two office storage cabinets, I decided that it was more cost effective to buy an office desk with drawer storage instead.

                Execuitve Home Office Design Board

                executive home office design board

Next, I finalized the office design orientation.

Lucky for me, I had power outlets and ethernet outlets on all 3 walls in my office.

But of course, I put the office in the center of the office looking out.

The office cord solution? Cutting a small slit in the rug in order to run the power behind the desk and plug into the wall.

I could do an entire post on office cord solution so let me know if you’d be interested!

The desk come in 3 pieces.

It is fairly easy to put together and take apart but I loved the white glove delivery.

All total, it took 10 minutes to put the desk together.

                Pottery Barn Executive Desk Cons

                Top drawers could be deeper

I had trouble finding desk organizers that were less than 1.5” deep.

Most drawer organizers are 2” deep.

But once I found some, I made these drawers work and they are very long allowing for a lot of shallow storage for pens, tape, lists receipts and so much more!

Wish that the drawers had a soft close feature

In my experience, most desks don’t come with a soft close drawer features but I just thought it would be nice!!

                First desk delivery came damaged

Luckily Pottery Barn let me use the damaged one (it was still functional).

So the main downside was that I had to empty the desk when they brought the new piece or I could have opted to wait but I had already disassembled my old desk so luckily I was to use the damaged one.

Pottery Barn shipped it fairly quickly and even offered to reimburse my white glove shipping costs so it all worked out.

                  Painting Foundation Of House

For years we have wanted to paint our concrete foundation.

Our foundation had lots of clay mud build up on it.

It also didn’t look finished like my neighbor’s house did right next door!

Now that we are full swing in our backyard makeover project.

We decide to squeeze in our foundation painting project prior to the patio installation along the back exterior wall & both side walls.

                  Before

                  Can you paint your foundation?

This was the first question that we asked.

We assumed you can paint the foundation of a house since we’ve seen it done on other homes in our neighborhood.

We have actually painted a form stoned exterior in one of our rental properties so this was our second DIY exterior painting job.

                  Exterior Foundation Paint

We have so many other aspects to this backyard makeover that I did not pre-plan the paint type or paint color.

The weekend we started, I called my local Sherwin Williams to see what type of paint they recommended for our project.

I recognized the gentlemen on the phone who gave me great recommendations on other projects like our mudroom, dining room & guest bedroom.

He asked lots of questions like how old is the foundation, is it poured concrete, etc.

They first recommended a paint called Luxon.

He said it was very thick and would fill it all in nicely.

I knew that we planned to use our paint sprayer so I asked if we could use this type of paint in a sprayer.

                  The answer was no.

He said that the other option was a paint called duration which I’m familiar with.

Can You Use Duration Paint on Exterior?

Even though this is an interior paint, we have used duration paint as exterior paint two times now with success so I highly recommend it.

Duration is the best paint for exterior foundation walls if you are using a paint sprayer.

We did the satin duration finish to make it easy to clean.

He recommended a 15-19 tip at 2000 PSI.

We had about 700 sq foot and we used about 5 gallons.

                  Concrete Foundation Paint Color

Why I had not thought through the foundation paint color prior to actually getting started is beyond me but I guess I had always assumed that I would paint the foundation similar to the siding color.

That is what my neighbor had done and that is what our landscape designer also showed.

                  Painting A Foundation

Plus our largest foundation wall is mostly under the deck so it’s completely shaded.

I went to the store and took a sample of our exterior siding.

                  Concrete foundation paint colors

The first color that I saw was called modern gray and it matched the siding perfectly.

We have this color in my master bedroom and bathroom.

I called my husband to get his thoughts and his immediate reaction was that it was too dark.

And he was right, sort of.

This color looks somewhat dark on stark white walls but when it’s sunny, its actually not that dark.

I feel like paint colors inside vs outside are completely different because of lighting.

                  Sherwin Williams Shitake

I found a color similar to modern gray but just slightly darker called Shitake.

30 minutes and 15 paint samples later, I was still totally stressing over the color.

I didn’t want the color to be to light and look dirty so I made the call to go with the Shitake paint color.

On my way home I googled the paint color online and it seemed like it would be a bit darker than I wanted so I decided we would only do 1 good coat vs 2.

I got home and put the paint sample up against each of the 3 sides of the foundation and it looked great, even under the deck where it was shady.

But you know how paint colors look different on the sample card vs the actual paint color on a wall?

                  So I was still stressed.

It was not until it started going on to the walls that I saw it and it was PERFECT.

Not too light, not too dark.

How to Paint Exterior Foundation Walls?

We started by powerwashing all the dirt and grime off the walls.

                  We just used water.

This look about 3 and a half hours for 700 sq feet.

It already looked SO much better without the mud & grime!

                  Paint Concrete Foundation

Next we prepped our paint sprayer.

Full disclosure, the paint sprayer preparation does take awhile.

But once you get it set, it will make the job MUCH easier.

We also had to tape and cover hose bibs, electrical outlets etc.

Then it was time to spray.

The paint sprayer makes it very easy to paint a house foundation.

You want to go from top to bottom and side to side to ensure you don’t miss a spot.

We weren’t sure if 5 gallons would be enough to do 1 coat but it was and it looks amazing!!!

                  Painting Foundation Of A House

                  Would I do this again?

                  Absolutely!

I highly recommendation foundation paint for your home.

I was surprised that there were not a ton of ideas, pictures and tutorials online.

They chose to do it because of the drastic difference it made in the elegance, formality and overall aesethic in the room.

When building, she chose to splurge on upgrades that they knew they would not be able to handle themselves one day and the coffered ceiling was one of them!
