Master Bedroom Design & Product Selection

Design

In case you missed it, you can read about the goals and inspiration I have for my master bedroom here! It’s best to start back in the beginning! Last week I shared my design board which really helped to bring my vision to life. Believe it or not, I actually changed some of my decisions based on how this design board looked on my computer!

Each week, I will share my ideas and progress so please make sure to subscribe for my weekly email updates!

If you are new to my blog, my husband and I designed and built our Custom dream home on a property that we developed which backs up to a state park! My husband Kris is very handy and we have been adding features and continuing to customize our home!

As you may have read in my prior posts, the master bedroom makeover is a complete overhaul. Not one thing is staying the same! I have many products to select but it’s going well so far. I have picked out all the new furniture! Last step before ordering is husband approval! But the furniture is real wood and is a really good price! I can’t wait to share with you all!! Luckily, it’s all a pretty short lead time as well. Its from a company that I haven’t seen a lot of marketing on but it’s gorgeous!

As I mentioned above, the design board has actually changed my mind on the feature wall design. I originally thought that I would do board & batten because we have board & batten in our master bathroom. But because we have two windows on this wall, I can tell from the design board that it would look a little choppy. No worries, I will do a board & batten feature wall in my guest bedroom for another One Room Challenge! Instead of the Board & Batten, I have decided to wall paper the entire wall. I love wall paper and don’t have any in my house yet! I’m also going to picture frame the bed with the same molding we just put in our dining room. You can see a picture of what that moulding looks like in my dining room progress update here. Then I will add the blinds, curtains and a wall hanging to finish off the feature wall!

Another thing I learned from my design board was that two curtain panels on each window is too much for the space. The windows flank the king size bed perfectly so I only want to do one curtain panel on each window. Otherwise, the space between the bed and the nightstand will be too crowded. I actually did one curtain panel on two windows in my daughter’s room as well and absolutely love it!

I’m currently deciding between a number of wall paper options that are all neutral. It is very important to pick out the furniture before finalizing the wall paper sample ideas to make sure that everything goes perfectly together!! I am ordering the wall paper samples today so that when I get the furniture, I can see it together before ordering. Remember last week when I told you that it can take me awhile to make decisions? Case in point…

One other big item is the rug for this space. I’m planning to tape out different rug sizes to nail down the size first. Once I have the size, I can shop specific rugs. There are so many great rug distributors out there! I will say that I can be picky about my rugs. Repacking and returning rugs is not a fun process! It can also be difficult to find a rug that lays right on carpet. But I’ve had success with rugs in 3 other bedrooms in our home so I CAN DO THIS! While I am at it, I hope to find a complimentary rug for our master closet!

The rug will go under the ottoman

My inspiration photos from week 2 have inspired my bedding selections! Earlier this week, I went to the Pottery Barn Outlet and found some of their fantastic bedding options for 60% off! I went with their Tencel Duvet Cover and matching shams! It’s so silky & soft and I can’t wait to start using it! While shopping, I found a number of other products for great deals for my home!!

I’m also shopping for faux Olive Trees for this space! I’ve rounded up Olive Tree’s in every size in this post.

Decluttering is also going well. I’ve filled up a large bag for donation, gave items to friends and have also sold a number of items online. It is truly amazing how getting rid of the mess reduces stress! Don’t miss my decluttering hacks & tips for having a minimalistic home blog post!

This weekend will be the major add to cart weekend!! I’m excited!

I am having a lot of fun making this project happen and sharing the journey with all of you here! As always, I would love to hear from you! Please comment below or contact me through my contact page.

Master Bedroom Planning & Design

Design

In case you missed it, you can read about the goals & inspiration I have for my master bedroom here. It’s best to start back in the beginning! Last week I shared my goals, my inspiration and some before pictures.

If you are new to my blog, my husband and I designed and built our Custom dream home on a property that we developed which backs up to a state park! My husband Kris is very handy and we have been adding features and continuing to customize our home!

Master Bedroom Design Board

You can find links to all products in my Like to Know It Post.

I spent a lot of time looking around at products and putting this design board together and in doing that, the ideas just kept flowing!

So here are the ideas I have come up with in addition to the normal bedroom stuff that I need to purchase.

  • DIY Wood Floating Shelves – I actually don’t have any “shelfies” to decorate in my home so when I was browsing for wall ideas above my dresser, I got really excited!
  • DIY Fandelier – I mentioned last week that I was going to look for a fandelier. Well I did and I didn’t find anything that would work… so I have an idea, not sure if it will work yet but I am going to try it! Stay tuned!!!
  • Feature Wall – this is the wall behind that bed that you see when you walk into the room. I’ve gone back and forth on this a number of times but laying out the design board with my layout really helped me. Originally I wanted to do Board & Batten since that is what we have in the bathroom but with the windows on that wall, I don’t think that is the best option. I had also always planned to somehow incorporate wall paper too. So as of right now, my plan is to wall paper the entire wall and then do a picture frame of moulding around the bed area! I think it will look awesome! See of few of my wall paper choices below.

There are so many great wallpaper options out there these days! Kris still reminds me of the old days wear wallpaper was cheap and made a mess when you go to take it down. I feel like we’ve gotten away from that and keep telling him that is not the case! I’ll keep you posted on that! There are two main wall paper brands that I am between right now – Sherwin Williams Essentials, Magnolia and Brewster!

SW Essentials 2801-6013
Magnolia Floral
Island Faux Grasscloth
Magnolia Patterned

Side tangent – it can sometimes take me awhile to make sure I am making the right decision. There are just so many stores with so many options!

I also actually have a lot of decluttering to do in this room. Is it just me or is the Master bedroom an easy target for clutter? It can’t go anywhere else so it’s the catch all place! Well not anymore. I’m listing stuff on Facebook marketplace, giving stuff to friends, and donating so that the clutter is gone! Mess = stress – am I right?

I’m also trying to incorporate a few family heirlooms into this space. My Grandmother was an incredibility special person to me and I am blessed to have a number of things that were hers. I am looking to incorporate into my master bedroom refresh. I even have a few things that she kept in her bedroom. So special!

A little bit about my design board…

Everything is centered around the bed! I am actually between this bed and one other but the price of this bed you totally cannot beat! If you need a new bed and are looking for an easy, affordable solution – look no further.

King Tufted Bed

We also need new nightstands. Nightstands can actually be pretty expensive. I also feel like nighstands are an item where you can do something a little bit different… not sure where I’ll land on this quite yet but I do like these simple, timeless nightstands in gray!

gray wood wash nightstand

Also, this rug! I love rug layering and I think a rug for this space will really add something! We have basic tan carpeting in all our bedrooms and all the other bedrooms have rugs except for ours so it is nice! I am loving the Lololi Brand Rugs!

Lololi Rug

The wall hanging over the bed is one of the biggest statement pieces for this room! If you have seen my dining room post then you saw the gorgeous piece of artwork I found there. While I was looking for that piece, I also found this one!

Framed Wall Art

Now that I have my vision, ordering all the products will be much easier! I just love clicking add to cart!

I’m so excited to share this master bedroom update journey and process with all of your here! As always, I would love to hear from you! please comment below or contact me through my contact page.

Coffered Ceiling & Wainscoting Moulding

Design· DIY

I am so excited to share that we have finally start to add our dining room moulding ideas!

We’ve been in our home for 2 years so it’s about time 🙂 I asked for this project to be kicked off for my Mother’s day gift so my husband definitely could not say no to that!

As we were designing our home, we had a few places where we thought it would be fun to jazz up the ceilings a bit vs regular old ceilings!

Table of Contents
  • Dining Room Moulding Ideas
  • Dining Room Coffered Ceiling
  • Shop My Dining Room
    formal dining room furniture

We have slanted tray ceilings in both our master bedroom and our 2 story open foyer. We had planned a tray ceiling in the dining room as you can see in the floor plan below. During the build process, we updated the tray ceiling to be a rectangular shape so that we could add a coffered ceiling later! Since we made this decision early in the process, all the lighting was pre-planned to accommodate the coffered ceiling too!

    dining room floor plan

Similar to our mudroom project that was recently completed which you can read about here, it’s taken us awhile to get to these projects because of how much work is involved! But as always, my hubby is so talented and is up for the challenge!

    Dining Room Moulding Ideas

Now, let me tell you a little bit about why now. Well, it all started with a little project idea I had… I love the wainscoting moulding and was looking for a simple wall to try it out! So I found this skinny wall at the bottom our stairway to add the moulding.

We loved how it turned out it so much. Kris said that it is almost like a continuation of the kitchen cabinets and made the wall look finished – and this is all before it’s even painted! It’s really going to be amazing once painted.

    wainscoting panels

So this was actually Kris’s idea to continue it into the dining room. Usually the ideas are mine! I wasn’t so sure because of the large buffet cabinet and couldn’t picture in my head how it would all be spaced. But then I saw an Instagram post that stopped me in my scroll of a dining room feature wall! It was perfect for our space, and although we would tweak ours and do it a little bit differently, I now had my vision!

So once we agreed that we liked it, I said, well given the order of the projects we have, I actually think this one should come first. Thinking further, we then said well, if we are going to move all the furniture and mobilize the paint sprayer, then we should just go ahead and get the coffered ceiling done too. This conversation happened a few days before Mother’s day so I said, ok, that is what I want for Mother’s Day! It’s a lot to be doing this project and our master bedroom refresh at the same time which you can read about here. But I’ll be glad that we pushed through and got these both done before Summer comes to Maryland.

Since the first wainscoting wall was already done, we had already picked out the moudling for that. I went to Home Depot and Lowes, each twice and ended up getting our moulding from Lowes. I’ve seen a lot of other special order moulding online and you can also get some really cool types online! We are doing the same moulding in the dining room. Here is the design!

    Dining Room Coffered Ceiling

The coffered ceiling planning process was a little more complicated. We looked at products, measurements in auto cad, the depth of the ceiling, the width of the squares, the shadow line options – so many options. I really was not expecting it to be so many decisions but as with any custom woodworking project, the options are really endless!

    Related: Coffered Ceiling Ideas

The first weekend, he was able to get a lot of the coffered ceiling done! He spent time moving out all the furniture and our light fixture, picking up materials, lots of measurements and calculations! Here is a progress photo!

The second weekend, he completed the remaining trim out for the ceiling and the feature wall! We have a special timelapse camera and I have slowly been publishing some fun timelapse IGTV videos if you want to check those out and follow along here.

Also, did I mention how hard it must be to work above your head on the ceiling?! And how hard it must be to build something you have never built before? So proud of my husband for being able to build this gorgeous ceiling and wall which we will enjoy for years to come!!

Now he says it’s going to take him an entire day to caulk and I believe that! So much caulking.

After caulking, we will prep to paint. We had a ton to learn about painting a coffered ceiling!

We have a Sherwin Williams commercial paint sprayer which will make the paint process actually pretty easy. We are going to try one of their new paint products too so I am excited!

I already have my light fixture linked here.

I have a few new décor items to add to this space as follows:

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. If you click through a link and make a purchase, it will earn me a small commission, at no additional cost to you! See our disclaimer for details.

    • Artwork for the feature wall above the buffet. Since I got the buffet over a year ago, I’ve never put any décor above it or on it so it’s time! I’ve got a really large rectangular piece of art picked out that I love – linked here.
    • Two fancy chairs. Chairs that the kids will not be using because they will be light colored linen fabric chairs! These will flank the triple window in this room which I think it will be so pretty! I have my eye on something like this.
    • I have not yet picked out the décor accents but these will be for the table and buffet top! That will be the last step as the room is coming together!

Fun fact, I actually don’t have chairs in my dining room. When we use the dining room, I bring my kitchen chairs in which are in the next room over. I use my dining room a lot for party serving so I like to have it open so that people can easily walk around the table. It also keeps the kitchen itself from being all cluttered! When the dining room is not in use, it looks bigger without all the chairs. I don’t know, it’s what I like! And its functional.

We are more than halfway through at this point so I wanted to give you all an update. I am so excited to to share the big reveal will all of you very soon! Please let me know if you have any questions – I would love to hear from you!

Master Bedroom Makeover Goals & Inspiration

    Design

So I did a thing on a whim and decided to sign up for the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge! This is my very first One Room Challenge and this is technically week 2!!

Update: 09-2020 – I totally failed the One Room Challenge!

It turned out to be the One Room Failure for a lot of reasons called life. But in all seriousness, we completed our dining room woodworking project as a lot of other unforeseen events happen too.

Anyway, I also changed my furniture and feature wall decisions about 10x too. That’s totally normal right?

But you can check out my most recent master bedroom progress here.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. If you click through a link and make a purchase, it will earn me a small commission, at no additional cost to you! See our disclaimer for details.

What is the One Room Challenge?

If you haven’t heard of the One Room Challenge before, it’s a biannual event for bloggers and Instagram influencers to completely makeover a space over an eight week time period. It’s sponsored by Better Home and Gardens with a number of other sponsors as well! I have joined as a guest participant. Every Thursday, I will share my ideas and progress so please make sure to subscribe for my weekly email updates!

If you are new to my blog, my husband and I designed and built our Custom dream home on a property that we developed which backs up to a state park! My husband Kris is very handy and we have been adding features and continuing to customize our home!

    Which Room Did I Pick?

I have always wanted to have a beautiful master bedroom but after two years of living in our dream home, I still don’t have actual bed (just the mattress and frame). I got rid of our old headboard when we moved thinking that I would get a new one right away but still have not! We have no curtains (just blinds), no pretty décor, and no rug (p.s. I love rug layering!). We are still using the bedroom set that I bought when I was 22! I am sooo tired of that bedding, those pillows, no headboard! I have also had those lamps since I was 22. It’s all got to go! It’s time for an upgrade but all our other projects keep taking priority.

Well not anymore with the One Room Challenge! I’m exciting to be doing this along with a group of other designers & bloggers! Its just what I need to see this project through.

Here is the before – I’m totally embarrassed to show this space!

Our master suite is actually 4 different spaces! Given this is a one room challenge, I’ll be focused on the main master suite.

    Master Suite Floor Plan

The master bathroom is already designed and decorated! The office, well I quasi finished this space as well but still have a long way to go – maybe next One Room Challenge? See pictures of the master bathroom, master closet and master office below.

    My Goals For This Transformation:

    • I want it to be beautiful – I want it to feel like I am at a spa hotel every single day!
    • I need it to be functional and organized. This is going to require some decluttering!
    • Design on a budget – I want to find great, quality products, but I don’t want top end of the range products. I like to find great deals!

One thing that is really important to me is the feature wall behind the bed. This is the first thing you see when you walk into the room. I have all kinds of ideas for that wall – wallpaper, wood, etc!!

Currently, our master suite has a gorgeous tray ceiling. I would love a chandelier but my husband and I also enjoy moving air with the ceiling fan so I may check out some fandeliers! I do like our current fan so I would just move that to another room.

Download Free Fonts Quickly & Easily to Your PC

    DIY

I’ve downloaded free fonts for LOTS of DIYs. I taught myself how to do this while planning our wedding because I made lots of DIY printables! If you didn’t know, I got pregnant on my honeymoon! So then I was working on DIY printables for my gender reveal & nursery. Over the years, I have downloaded and used creative fonts for lots bridal & baby showers projects too!

I used a free font for one of my baby nursery printables for Taylor which was saved on my computer but I opened my Microsoft word document and my font wasn’t there because I got a new computer… no problem, just need to redownload! Except it has been a while. Luckily, it’s like riding a bike and I remembered fairly quickly but figured I’d share for all of you! I was able to find the exact font and reinstall in 1, 2, 3!

Check out my baby nursery printables here.

My favorite free font site is dafont.com.

First you select the font that you want. There are many different types:

    • Calligraphy
    • Handwritten
    • Fancy Curly
    • Script
    • Cartoon
    • Theme
    • Decorative
    • Retro

Pick your font and simply hit DOWNLOAD! Here I Picked the Pretty Girls Script demo.

Now it downloaded a zip file and you may be thinking what in the heck do I do with that?

Not to worry! Open the zip by double clicking and then you will see the font name + demo.

Double click again on the + demo file and then hit “install”.

My install button is grayed out because I already hit install.

Now, if you would like to check and see that it was installed… search your computer for the Control Panel. Once you are there. Go to the appearance and personalization folder.

And then you see the font folder – who knew right?

I didn’t even have to close Microsoft office! My font was immediately there for my use! Yay!!

Have fun with this and don’t forget to email me with your favorite font finds and DIY printables that you make!! I’m so glad you stopped by my website! Hopefully you can download some of your own free fonts!

I also wanted to share with you all another super easy & fun way to use different fonts. I have been using Canva on both my PC and the app and it’s absolutely amazing! I can create absolutely anything! I love it and use it every day! If you aren’t using Canva, I highly recommend it!
